Digital Avionics Information System Preliminary Life-Cycle-Cost Analysis.

Abstract

A mathematical model was developed and exercised to evaluate the life-cycle costs of avionics developed according to the Digital Avionics Information System (DAIS) approach. The objective was to provide an initial estimate, based on available data, of the costs and cost savings associated with the DAIS concept. A comparative analysis was performed to estimate the relative costs of the avionics of four different aircraft types for both conventional and DAIS configurations. The results of this analysis were intended only to provide a perspective of the relative costs of DAIS and conventional avionics systems; they do not necessarily represent the true costs that may be encountered in an operational environment. The depth and accuracy of the estimates made in this report are necessarily restricted by the available data and the limited scope of the study. The DAIS costs are preliminary estimates or projections supplied by the DAIS Program Office at the Air Force Avionics Laboratory (AFAL). The data for the conventional avionics were extracted from many sources, including the Increase Reliability of Operational System (IROS) data system. Therefore, interpretation of the analyses contained in this report should be restricted to an assessment of the relative cost of the avionics integration approaches that have been addressed.
