Structure and Function of the Human Patella: The Role of Cancellous Bone.

Abstract

The structure and properties of the cancellous bone of the human patella are reviewed. Contact areas for various angles of flexion are presented and are correlated with the primary structural features. The spatial variation of stiffnesses of the cancellous bone are discussed relative to the function of the patella. Implications for the design of prosthesis are suggested.
