Human Performance in the Tropics I: Man-Packing A Typical Load over a Standard Jungle Course in the Wet and Dry Seasons.

Abstract

In 1972, the US Army Tropic Test Center conducted studies of the performance of combat soldiers in the natural jungle of the Panama Canal Zone. A standard 4-kilometer course was established in rugged jungle terrain and vegetation to yield group and individual scores on timed performance events and physiological factors. This study compares seasonal foot mobility by testing soldiers in the dry and wet seasons. A total of 100 soldiers traversed the course carrying a standard 25-pound load. Measurements were made of a forced march, an uphill run, double timing, normal walking, total course time, weight loss, and water consumption.
