Abstract

The report is part of the 12-volume report entitled 'Hydrologic Engineering Methods for Water Resources Development,' prepared by The Hydrologic Engineering Center (HEC) as a part of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' participation in the International Hydrological Decade. This volume relates the mathematical equations for flow in natural channels to the physical process. The most common method for solving these basic equations, the standard step method, is developed for complex cross sections using techniques which are suitable for both hand and computer calculations. One of the objectives of this volume is to delineate the degree of simplification that is appropriate for analysis of water surface profiles in natural channels. The procedures are illustrated by solving an example problem by manual computations; however, the more common practice in the Corps of Engineers is to use electronic computers to calculate water surface profiles. Programs for this purpose are readily available.
