Combustor Component Development. Volume III. Helium-Saturated Propellant.

Abstract

A series of test firings of a full-scale, gas/liquid, N2O/CO/CH4/N2 GDL combustor was performed to determine the effect of helium saturation of the N2O (at 1300 psi and 0 F, corresponding to about 1.5 mole percent He) on combustor performance, stability, feed/system controls, and heat flux, and on product gas uniformity. Eight tests were carried out. The results showed that this level of helium saturation of the N2O had no measurable effect on combustor performance (c* efficiency remained at 99 percent), dynamic stability (combustor remained stable), heat flux, or product gas uniformity. Solution of helium in N2O at levels greater than 0.5 mole percent did, however, affect the functioning of the N2O cavitating venturi flow controller by significantly decreasing the discharge coefficient of the venturi throat. In the course of the test program, the GDL secondary (nitrogen) injector was modified to improve its mixing efficiency. Experimental measurements made over the product gas flowfield showed that the modified injector configuration gave produce gas with high degrees of thermal and compositional uniformity. (Author)
