A Multiprocessor Design

Abstract

This report addresses the issues involved in the design of a multiprocessor. The author explores a wide range of design considerations and arrives at judgments of relative merit at each decision point; the results of these decisions lead to a particular multiprocessor design. A real multiprocessor has been built to this design, and its configuration and performance are described. This system, the Pluribus, has many advantages over other computer systems in cost-effectiveness, reliability, modularity, and expansibility.
