Evaluation of Various Protective Coatings When Applied Under Adverse Conditions.
Abstract
An investigation was to develop meaningful performance data on various protective coatings applied under adverse conditions. The test program demonstrated the severity of the catapult environment on protective coatings and established basic guidelines for the specification of cost-effective primer coatings in the typical catapult environment. Under conditions where a near white metal sandblast can be obtained, the optimum prime coat is an inorganic zinc-rich coating exclusive of flame-sprayed metal coatings. If a near white metal surface is unobtainable, preliminary test results indicate that a rust-stabilizing pretreatment, equivalent to Corroless 'S', topcoated with a compatible coating will provide adequate service in the typical catapult environment. Three coatings tested in this program were determined to be compatible with Corroless 'S'.
