Piezo-Optic Properties of Liquids under High Pressure.

Abstract

A new interferometric method of measuring delta n, the variation of refractive index of liquids with pressure, to 14 kbar is described. The results obtained on delta n versus pressure up to the freezing point of water and carbon tetrachloride at room temperature are presented and discussed. A schematic diagram of the experimental arrangement is shown. With such a system it is now possible to carry out precision interferometric measurements on the piezo- and elasto-optic properties of various liquids, up to a maximum pressure of 14 kbars.
