Lithium Sulfuryl Chloride Battery.

Abstract

LiAlCl4 in SO2Cl2 was used as the electrolyte in a battery with a lithium metal anode and a carbon cathode. A preliminary conductivity value for LiAlCl4 (2.5M) in SO2Cl2 at 25C was found to be 5 plus or minus 2 X 10 to the -3 power Ohm/cm. A simple four point probe conductivity measurement method has been devised in order to avoid frequency dependent impedance behavior at electrodes and to improve the precision of conductance measurement. Discharge characteristics of the cell Li/LiAlCl4(2.5M)-SO2Cl2/C were studied. Open circuit voltage of 3.96V was obtained. Accumulation of reduction products on the carbon cathode decreased the life of the cell. Replacement of the cathode renewed cell activity.
