An Evaluation of a Fluorosilicone Elastomer Used as a Dynamic Seal in the LANCE Propulsion System

Abstract

Poly(trifluoropropyl) methyl siloxane (a fluorosilicone elastomer), the material used as a dynamic seal in the LANCE propulsion unit, was heat-aged for five years at 150 to 160 F. Physical and mechanical properties were monitored through this evaluation and it was found that the elastomer had lost 70% of its tensile strength. Thus, it was evident that this elastomer was temperature-sensitive and should be monitored when used in critical applications. (Author)
