An Exploratory Laboratory Simulation of Stick-Slip Induced Vibration of Water-Lubricated Compliant-Layer Bearings.

Abstract

An experimental investigation was undertaken to examine the mechanism of sound and vibration generation of a water-lubricated compliant surface bearing system when fluid film separation of the sliding surface is not fully realized. The test bearing is a square pad which was sectioned from a commercially made stern-tube bearing stave. A Lexan disk attached to a drill press spindle provides the sliding surface and permits direct observation of the contact zone. Mounting compliance was varied by using two different methods of attachment of the bearing pad. Low-speed conditions were emphasized (up to 45 ips) with varying load up to 200 psi. Accelerometer and microphone records were obtained at the onset and during self-excited system oscillations. Photographs of the contact zone were taken with and without the presence of vibrations.
