Selected VHF Channel Simulator Transmission Phenomenon.

Abstract

A Tactical Channel Simulator system using a tapped delay line technique was used to record, on magnetic tape, the perturbations that the VHF media imposes on R.F. transmission. The outputs from the simulator's delay line taps were plotted on strip charts to show dispersions recorded by its prober-analyzer sub-system during on-the-air VHF channel tests. Characteristic traces of multipath caused by off-path reflections from both stationary (terrain) and moving (aircraft) objects were observed. Binary error occurrences were correlated with dispersions due to aircraft and suspected lightning activity.
