Abstract

The present publication contains Chapter 6, the first chapter of Volume II of the Manual. Volume II deals with 'Causes and Prevention of Structural Damage' and Chapter 6 treats, in comprehensive detail, the problem of prevention of cumulative damage due to fretting, fatigue, corrosion, stress corrosion and embrittlement. Sudden in-service failure of aircraft structures is often the result of cumulative damage which has been induced over a finite period of time. Contained in this publication is an outline of the causes of failure and extensive sections dealing with corrosion and stress corrosion. An attempt is made to summarize those aspects of scientific knowledge in the field which are particularly relevant to the structural design process. Information is provided that can be used by designers to improve the environmental resistance of future vehicles and thus produce important benefits in cost and maintenance reduction and in aircraft availability and flight safety.
