An Evaluation of the Harbors of Iwakuni and Kure, Japan as Typhoon Havens

Abstract

This study is an evaluation of the harbors of Iwakuni and Kure, Japan as possible typhoon havens. Characteristics of the harbors considered include location and accessibility, the effects of topography, wave action, and storm surge during tropical cyclone passage. Other considerations discussed are the possibilities of seeking refuge in these harbors, proceeding to other havens, or evasion at sea. Tropical cyclone tracks from 1947-1972 for the western North Pacific were analyzed to determine the probability of threat to Iwakuni and Kure. First-hand observations by the author and conversations with local harbor authorities and mateorologists are incorporated into the conclusions. The study verifies Kure as a safe typhoon haven and designates certain anchorages near Iwakuni as safe from the most severe conditions associated with tropical cyclones.
