Learning to Identify Complex Sounds Using Explicit Instructions,
Abstract
This investigation was part of a series designed to explore how untrained listeners learn to identify complex sounds. The complex sounds in previous studies (above and Webster et al, 1970) and in the present study included sections of vowels, musical instruments and synthetic buzzes. They were presented under varying conditions of octave-shift, noise masking, and filtering which sometimes excluded and sometimes emphasized harmonics. In the present investigation the same material was presented for identification, this time accompanied by explicit descriptions of the sounds. The descriptions included their nature and the varying conditions of presentation. The aim was to explore whether informed awareness of sounds could help naval ratings to identify them.
