Hydraulically Powered Underwater Tools for the Installation and Maintenance of the Multileg Mooring Systems.

Abstract

This report covers the development of hydraulically powered tools for both surface and underwater use in the installation and servicing of offshore tanker mooring and ship-to-shore offloading pipeline systems. The power unit is a gasoline-engine-powered hydraulic pump assembly mounted in a container which can be placed on the ground or in a small boat or floated on the surface of the water while in use. Two hydraulically powered winch-hoists are included for use during replacement of the hose on the seaward end of the ship-to-shore pipeline. Other components are a light-duty impact wrench, a hydraulic drill, a heavy-duty impact wrench, a disc-wheel grinder, and two cable cutters capable of cutting wire rope of up to 1 1/2-inch and 3/4 inch diameters, respectively. A pressure intensifier is also included to operate the larger of the two cable cutters provided.
