Gamma-Ray Energy Deposition in Silicon Detectors.

Abstract

Calculations have been performed of total gamma-ray energy deposition spectra in a silicon ionization dosimeter based on a silicon surface barrier detector. The technique used was coupled photon-electron transport using the Monte Carlo code SANDYL. Measurements are also reported of the sensitive volume and of the nonuniformity of the charge-collection efficiency in the detector. These measurements have been used to formulate a model of the detector which leads to improved agreement between calculation and experiment. In addition, benchmark Monte Carlo calculations have been performed of the energy deposition spectra in small-geometry silicon detectors surrounded by aluminum hemispheres. (Author)
