Polyphosphazene Wire Coverings.
Abstract
On-board ship fires present a serious threat to men and material, both from the standpoint of heat emitted and also from electrical insulation can be a major source of these hazards. Conventional insulation materials when ignited can drip and propagate the fire or, if they contain halogen, can generate smoke which may lead to loss of life and destruction of costly equipment. The Navy has an active program to develop fire-resistant polymers for marine applications and under this program the polyphosphazenes are being studied as replacements for polymers now used aboard Navy vessels. This semiannual technical report covers the period July 1, 1975 to September 30, 1975 and summarizes work performed for the development of polyphosphazene electrical insulation materials. The objective of this program is to develop polyphosphazene insulation compounds suitable for Naval use on the basis of physical properties, cost and processability.
