Temperature Compensated Piezoelectric Materials

Abstract

In order to search for new temperature compensated materials for surface acoustic wave (SAW) devices with low ultrasonic attenuation and high electromechanical coupling, the following experimental investigations were carried out: (1) Crystal growth experiments were performed on Ba2Ge2TiO8, Ba2Si2TiO8 and Pb2KNb5O15. Single crystals of Ba2Ge2TiO8 and of Pb2KNb5O15 of sufficient size and quality for property measurement were obtained. (2) For alpha-berlinite, AlPO4, measurement of the single crystal elastic constants, their temperature dependence, and the temperature dependence of the thermal expansion coefficient was completed, and estimates of the piezoelectric constants were obtained. (3) For beta-eucryptite, LiAlSiO4, the single crystal elastic constants were measured as a function of temperature and pressure. The temperature and pressure coefficients of all elastic constants are negative.
