Response of the Magnetosphere and Atmosphere to the Solar Wind

Abstract

The general goal of this contract was to obtain a better quantitative understanding of the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere and atmosphere. Several scientific goals were formulated and meet. They included the fabrication of quantitative models of the shape and location of the dayside cusps, the total magnetospheric magnetic field, and of total neutral atmospheric density. These models, together with others developed or under developement with other DoD support, should provide a first set of software capable of being used to specify environmental behavior, with emphasis being given to those aspects which influence the performance of hardware systems.
