Aqueous Halogen Equilibria Case I. Halogen in Pure Water.

Abstract

A 'Master Equation' is derived for the exact determination of the concentrations of halogen species formed when elemental chlorine, bromine or iodine have been added to a water containing no interacting substances. The solutions to this equation apply only to equilibrium conditions and are only as exact as the equilibrium constants used in the calculations. Simplified lower order equations are also derived for such determinations where known boundary conditions exist. Logic diagrams are presented for the solution of 'Master Equation' with the aid of a computer or a programmable calculator. A program is presented for solving the 'Master Equation' on the Hewlett-Packard 9830A Calculator. (Author)
