Use of Infrared Radiance Measurements in Dynamic Analysis.

Abstract

Sets of special upper-air observations on both mesoscales and synoptic scales over land were subjected to isentropic analyses to define tropospheric distributions of mass divergence and the rates of change of temperature-pressure gradients. Profiles of temperature and humidity were used to compute radiances corresponding to those measured by profile radiometers aboard NOAA satellites. A study was made of the feasibility of inferring tropospheric mass divergence from multispectral radiance changes associated with the temperature-pressure changes.
