Word Frequencies in Technical Instruction.

Abstract

The tabulation of the words appearing in this report is a product of a study undertaken to prepare test instruments for measuring English language proficiency. The tests were to be designed to screen, on the basis of language ability alone, personnel from foreign countries who were to receive training in U.S. military training programs of the Department of Defense. This screening should result in the selection of foreign military personnel whose English fluency is such that they would be able to profit from U.S. military training received in classes consisting mainly of American personnel. It was felt that a primary requirement in the development of such a test was the determination of the level of language difficulty represented in current, on-going military instruction.
