Modification of Ray Optics when Attenuation Is Significant.

Abstract

A formulation of ray optics is developed which is valid when attenuation is sigiificant. The theory involves the tracing of rays through a complex space. The new results differ from those of the classical theory in that energy penetrates into shadow regions and the infinities in the cross section associated with caustics are replaced by a finite cross section with a peak value varying inversely as the square root of the collision frequency.
