The ECSS II Language for Simulating Computer Systems.

Abstract

ECSS 2 is a specialized programming language for constructing simulation models of computer-based systems. It provides a rich variety of statements and data-structures for describing common computer hardware configurations, software operations, and workload characteristics in a natural and straightforward notation. It has been implemented as an extension of the general-purpose simulation language SIMSCRIPT 2, and that language is included as a subset. This report is a tutorial manual describing ECSS 2 and how it is used to build simulation models. It is divided into four parts. Part I contains a brief introductory chapter discussing the use of simulation in analyzing computer systems and some of the key features of ECSS 2 that assist in that process. Parts II, III, and IV describe the language constructs in successively greater levels of detail.
