Is Behavior in a Commons Dilemma Game Related to Real World Behavior

Abstract

Since the publication of Garrett Hardin's essay, 'The Tragedy of the Commons' (1968), psychologists, political scientists, and economists have shown increasing interest in understanding the determinants of choice behavior in situations where an individual's own best interest conflicts with those of some larger group which includes him. This research attempts to assess the validity of a laboratory analogue of the commons dilemma. Whether behavior in a laboratory commons dilemma game (CDG) relates to behavior in real world commons dilemmas. Problems in the validation of games are discussed, and previous research linking game behavior to the personalities, attitudes and real world behaviors of participants is summarized.
