SL-7 Instrumentation Program Background and Research Plan.

Abstract

The SL-7 Instrumentation Program includes measurement of hull stresses, accelerations and environmental and operating data on the S.S. SEA-LAND McLEAN, development and installation of a microwave radar wavemeter for measuring the seaway encountered by the vessel, a wave tank model study and a theoretical hydrodynamic analysis which relate to the wave-induced loads, a structural model study and a finite element structural analysis which relates to the structural response, and installation of long term stress recorders on each of the eight vessels of the class. This report presents an overview of the program. The experimental background upon which the program was based and the major features and expected outputs of each of the program elements are discussed, and some preliminary conclusions drawn from the research results are presented. A detailed description of the possible data correlations and their consequences is included. The long-range goal of the program is to advance understanding of the performance of ships' hull structures and the effectiveness of the analytical and experimental methods used in their design. A research plan to achieve this is outlined.
