A Study for Improved Stabilizing Techniques for Hand-Held Optical Viewing Devices.

Abstract

Requirements for handheld viewing devices to be used in the cockpit of an OV-10 type aircraft have been investigated. From the specified operational environment it is shown that a field of view of 10 degrees total is required for acquisition, a magnification of 16X (if the optical quality of canopy permits) is required for identification, and one radian per second tracking rate as 93 percent image motion compensation from 1 to 50 Hz for a vibration with maximum amplitude of 5 degrees is required. For ease of operation and safety considerations it is also desired that the weight be less than one pound and theat the size be less than 6 inches long. It is shown from review of currently avialable stabilaization techniques that the technology utilizing an inertially stabilized, internally located optical component is most suitable to meet the requirements. From the trade-off study a set of parameters for the design of a stabilized viewing device is developed.
