Vietnamese Physicians: A National Asset or a National Liability.

Abstract

During Summer 1975, the state of Nebraska initiated a program of instruction for twenty-six Vietnamese refugee physicians to help them prepare themselves linguistically, enculturally, and professionally so that they might pass the two major medical licensure examinations: the E.C.F.M.G. and FLEX tests. As part of the effort, an eight-week language and enculturation program was established at Creighton University for the physicians and their dependents. The main intent of this paper is to describe that language and enculturation program. Through a discussion of the difficulties encountered with both sponsors and physicians in terms of expectations and through consideration of the major problems connected with scheduling, the organization of classes, the scope of the program, and the selection of instructional materials, this essay attempts to provide insights relative to both the achievements and failures of the program which will assist communities around the country in preparing courses of language instruction of Vietnamese physicians in particular and Vietnamese refugees in general and will help make the assimilation of the Vietnamese into American Society considerably easier.
