Exploratory Aluminum-Chlorine Thermally Activated Battery: Single Cell Experiments.
Abstract
Single cells which can be considered prototypes of the individual cells in a low temperature pile type thermal battery have been constructed and characterized. Both binary AlCl3,NaCl and ternary AlCl3. NaCl, KCl electrolytes were studied. Eight concentration cells with aluminum electrodes were tested. Twenty-three formation cells with aluminum anodes were studied; cathode configurations tested in formation cells included: (1) Cl2, graphite, W; (2) NiCl2, graphite, Ni and (3) C4.5F, graphite, W. Materials employed to immobilize the electrolyte included fiberglass felt and Cab-O-Sil. Operating temperatures ranged from 109 C to 222 C. Key findings: (1) NaAlCl4 melts can be effectively immobilized by Cab-O-Sil; (2) Current densities in excess of 1 mA/sq cm can be achieved with formation cells; (3) Both NiCl2, graphite, Ni and C4.5F, graphite, W are attractive candidate cathodes for formation cells.
