Static Pressure Effects on Stern Seal Lift and Drag of the XR-3 Captured Air Bubble Testcraft.

Abstract

Tests were run to determine the static pressure forces present on the surface of the stern seal of the XR-3 surface effects ship testcraft. These experimentally determined forces were resolved into lift and drag following a determination of stern seal shape at each of the test speeds. The lift and drag determinations cannot yet be meaningfully related to total drag of the craft, but they provide an isolated look at direct effects of plenum chamber overpressures while varying speed. The unique variations of seal position and shape with changes in velocity, noted and documented during this project, may present new difficulities in attempts to analytically model and evaluate seal performance.
