Preferred Frequencies in the Human Electroencephalogram.

Abstract

Past efforts in spectral analysis of the electroencephalogram at the Naval Postgraduate School are reviewed. Preferred frequencies are defined as those frequencies which exhibit increased magnitude or duration when a subject is engaged in specific activities. Findings related to the behavior of particular frequencies at various scalp positions are discussed. Primary emphasis is on the motor cortex and the junction of the temporal, parietal and occipital regions. Data is presented indicating that frequency ranges 4-8 Hz and 60-120 Hz show increased correlation between closely spaced electrodes when subjects are presented with tasks. Other possible preferred frequencies related to activities such as limb movement, multiplication and reaction to light are presented.
