Southern Rhodesia: A Society in Transistion.

Abstract

This essay considers the question of how long Southern Rhodesia will remain under white minority rule. Southern Rhodesia, a self-governing colony since 1923, has been under the political and economic control of a white minority since its inception. Information in this paper is a result of extended literary research and personal experiences in Southern Rhodesia, Zambia, Botswana and Mozambique. The changing power structure in southern Africa has remained on the periphery of Southern Rhodesia. However a new dimension has been added to the southern African picture as a result of the attainment of independence by the black-ruled government of Mozambique which shares a significant border with Southern Rhodesia. The pressures exerted by the nationalist groups and black ruled states, coupled with a pragmatic South Africa intent on detente in southern Africa indicates the likelihood of majority rule in Southern Rhodesia in the near future.
