Communications Network Timing.

Abstract

The report is intended to provide the reader with sufficient information to develop his own intuitive insight into questions related to timing of switched digital networks employing time division multiplexing. It describes timing requirements inherent in such networks. It describes a number of basic techniques any one of which is capable of fulfilling these requirements. It presents possible objectives for a DCS timing concept, provides additional background relative to timing in the DCS, and discusses provisions for system interfaces which can be advantageous. This technical report does not attempt to show that any one basic technique should be used to the exclusion of all others, but recommends a timing approach which employs several basic concepts, each where it best matches the needs of the network. It is an approach which permits an orderly evolution from the present timing status to a much more capable system. Although it is not an approved DCA approach, it is a tentative approach which will be subjected to considerable further study (along with other approaches) to either verify its desirability or recommend changes.
