Heat and Mass Transfer in the Human Respiratory Tract at Hyperbaric Pressures.

Abstract

The primary objective of this study is to model the simultaneous heat and momentum transfer in the lower respiratory tract. Experimental velocity and temperature profiles are presented in two and three dimensional format. A computer program to calculate gas transport properties for any gas mixture at any pressure was developed. Methods to measure humidity at depth are also discussed. The respiratory heat loss of a diver working at 1000+ feet is discussed. Finally data from this study are compared with the sparse data available in the literature and with data from experiments performed under simulated diving conditions. Suggestions are made for continuing and additional studies in the field of respiratory heat loss.
