Evaluation of Synthetic Waxes for Desensitizing Explosives.
Abstract
A shortage of Grade A wax, MIL-W-20553B, for Navy HBX explosives resulted in several waxes being proposed as replacements. Thirteen samples, received for preliminary evaluation, were screened on the basis of differential scanning calorimetry results, exudation behavior at 71 degrees Celsius (deg C), compatibility with H-6 explosive, and incorporability in TNT. The three most promising candidates were selected for further testing against all of the requirements of the wax specification. Laboratory batches of H-6 were prepared using the candidate waxes. The H-6 was evaluated for processing, explosive characteristics, and behavior on thermal cycling between plus 71 C and minus 54 C. None of the candidate waxes performed as well as the standard wax and none are recommended for large scale HBX studies. (Author)
