Quality Assurance Mechanisms in the United States: from There to Where,

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is threefold: to place recent developments in quality assurance in the United States in an historical perspective; to describe ongoing quality assurance programs and analyze their potential for actually improving quality of medical care and thereby the health of the American people; and to indicate those areas in which continuing research on both the methods of quality assessment and on the actual level of care rendered must proceed.
