Policy Issues in Quality Assurance,

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to foster interdisciplinary work in the quality assurance area. To accomplish this, the fundamental issues that are pertinent to investigational activities in the quality assessment or assurance area will be discussed. Clearly, the use of quantitative skills which are possessed by most operations researchers in the areas of modeling, decisionmaking, eliciting group judgments, and predicting outcomes under uncertainty will be necessary if progress is to be made in this area. It is important for academic medicine to train physicians who have the quantitative skills which enable them to interact with sociologists, operations researchers, psychometricians, and economists; on the other hand, it is incumbent upon members of these latter disciplines to learn enough about medical care to enable them to use their techniques and skills wisely when they are applied to questions about the delivery of medical care.
