The Accuracy of Consumer Surveys in Describing Markets for Hypothetical Goods,

Abstract

The paper attempts to appraise the present state of knowledge on the accuracy of consumer surveys in describing markets for hypothetical, or proposed, goods and services. It is written with particular regard for those types of survey questions that were being developed to evaluate the social impact of the programs of the National Heart and Lung Institute (NHLI), NIH. The method of research consisted primarily of a review of relevant literature, and also included interviews with persons familiar with survey techniques.
