CCU (Coronary Care Unit) Design, Staffing, and Operating Policies,

Abstract

The paper presents the results of a survey of Coronary Care Unit (CCU) design, staffing, and operating policies. Subsequent reports will study the patients treated in CCUs, but this one is concerned with the CCUs themselves. The chief purpose of the paper is to present a recent profile of the CCUs in the study. The information in the paper is a description of the group of CCUs in the Rand study, not of patient outcomes in different CCUs. As such, the statistics contained in the paper are a way of summarizing descriptive information about CCUs, not an evaluation of the adequacy of patient care.
