Experiences in Conducting a Review of Statistical Program Packages,

Abstract

The Health Insurnace Study (HIS) is a complex, multi-yeared, longitudinal study of the role of health insurance in the utilization of health care services. As part of this study, a large experimentally gathered data base is being constructed and will be analyzed by researchers from several disciplines using various statistical tools. Rand has acquired and supports several general-purpose statistical program packages in addition to packages which perform more specific statistical analyses. In order to better understand the use of these packages on this large data base and to enhance the information available to the HIS staff members who utilize statistical software, a review of package features was conducted in light of HIS project and data base characteristics. The considerations and criteria employed in the review are presented.
