Resuscitation and Treatment of the Injured.
Abstract
The objectives of the project involved several major areas concerned with resucitation of the injured. An evaluation of the efficacy of various fluid replacement regimens revealed that resucitation according to the method advocated by Moyer was superior to all other methods tested. These studies also showed that attempts to support the circulation with norepinephrine are most successful using low doses in the range of 2 micrograms/kilogram. Studies designed to study heat and energy losses in the traumatized patient revealed that energy losses in the burned patient are beyond the usual means of energy supply to the patient. Hence, pigskin heterografts are very effective as a means of preventing large energy losses in such patients. These same studies also revealed an extremely high energy need for severely traumatized individuals and point out the advantage of early hyperalimentation in these patients. Several new concepts in bioengineering were evaluated in this study. These included the air fluidized bed, the x-ray grid and a system of low flow vein - to - vein hemodialysis.
