Feasibility Study of Reduced-State Viterbi Detection for Capacity Improvement of Band-Limited Satellite Communication Channels.

Abstract

The applicability of a new detection method to band-limited satellite channels is analyzed and described. The method, termed reduced-state Viterbi detection, is a derivative of the Viterbi algorithm. The performance of the algorithm with idealized band-limited satellite channels was studied through analysis and simulation. The results are stated in practical terms. The cost of building a 1-Mbps version of a reduced-state Viterbi detector is estimated with the aid of a block diagram design. Reduced-state Viterbi detection appears attractive as a means of enhancing the capacity of present band-limited satellite channels: Capacity increases of 50% or more seem feasible at reasonable cost.
