Mechanical Properties of 2014-T651 Aluminum to 800 F.

Abstract

The mechanical behavior of 2014-T651 aluminum alloy has been characterized at temperatures up to 800 F. Uniaxial tension tests at 800 F have been performed at strain rates from .0001 to 10 in/in/sec and show the material to be extremely strain rate sensitive. Additional uniaxial tension tests were performed in order to determine the yield stress as a function of temperature thru 900 F at a strain rate of .0001 in/in/sec. Using a combination of axial tension/compression and torsion (applied at various stress ratios), the yield surface under conditions of multiaxial stress was determined. The results agree with the von Misses yield condition. The fracture toughness, K(IC) as a function of temperature was also measured for this alloy. (Author)
