Tolerances on the Accuracy of Absorption Corrections for Atmospheric Ozone.
Abstract
This document discusses inherent limitations on the accuracy of computerized corrections for absorption of radiation by atmospheric ozone. The accuracy of the correction is related to the accuracy of the measured vertical profile of ozone. A precise correction for large ozone absorption requires a small error tolerance in measured ozone density. If the absorption is small, large error tolerances in the measured profile of ozone density are permitted. If relative line intensities, instead of absolute line intensities, are required, even less accurate ozone densities are acceptable. Variations in ozone density in going from day to night are related to changes in ozone absorption. The influence of earth curvature on the atmospheric transmission equation is established. This report is the first part of documents describing computer corrections for atmospheric attenuation.
