Analysis and Cross Sections of Vacuum UV Absorption of O2 in the Ground (X triplet Sigma (g) (-)) and Metastable (a singlet Delta g) States.

Abstract

Molecular oxygen, O2 is involved in a wide variety of significant reactions in the earth's upper atmosphere. However, a pre-1972 review of the literature revealed the surprising fact that much of the molecular structure of O2 in terms of term analysis, Morse-curves, etc., and the detailed quantitative photon interaction processes with O2 in the region from 6 to 15 eV were still largely unknown. The following research then represents an effort to bridge known gaps, and the resulting publications can be grouped under two general headings: (1) An analysis of the Vacuum UV Absorption Spectrum of neutral O2 and (2) the Measurement of Absorption Cross Sections of O2 either in the Ground or in a Metastable State.
