Thermally Induced Migration of Apiezon C. The Effects of Vacuum and Surface Finish.

Abstract

An investigation of the surface migration of thin films of Apiezon C on metal substrates has been undertaken. The study was initiated in order to determine the effect of temperature gradients on the distribution of lubricants in spacecraft mechanical assemblies. The results of experiments performed in air were described earlier. It was verified that the effect observed at that time is also present under vacuum conditions. The important role played by surface finishes was demonstrated.
