An Investigation of Slender-Body Wake Vortices.

Abstract

The results of an investigation into the structure of slender missile body wake vortices are described. Symmetric and asymmetric vortex patterns are considered. Laser doppler velocimeter probing of the flow field produced data from which vortex strengths, positions, and induced velocities were determined. These were then compared with predictions of various theories. It was concluded that considerable upgrading of theory will be necessary before adequate engineering models of vortices become available.
