Variable Rate Source Coding.

Abstract

The chief result of this thesis is an extension of the variable rate source coding theorem for a family of ergodic sources. Some aspects of the continuity of the rate-distortion function are also discussed, and an OPTA function for variable rate source codes is defined and some properties are given. In any rigorous presentation of work in rate-distortion theory, it is necessary to consider a precise description of the stationary source. The following section presents a brief mathematical description of the stationary source. (Author)
