Design, Develop, Fabricate and Test Instrumentation for a Rocket-Borne Measurement of Atmospheric Density.

Abstract

Instrumentation to measure atmospheric density in the 100 km to 160 km altitude region was designed fabricated and tested. The instrumentation consisted of two 4.5 kev electron beams, pulsed synchronously with the telemetry Pulse Code Modulation format, each with an average beam current of one milliampere. Observation of the beam induced brehmsstrahlung was made with two proportional counters with Krypton gas fill and 2 mil beryllium windows. Observation of the ultraviolet fluorescence was made with three photometers using narrow band 3914 A filters. This report presents the sensor specifications and details the electrical design of the instrumentation. (Author)
